We have a keen interest in genuine crypto experiences, and while at Bitcoin 2023 in Miami earlier this year, I had the delightful opportunity to meet Scott and Malory Sibley, the minds behind a STEM-approved card game called SHAmory. This engaging memory card game is designed for children and serves to educate them about the basics of blockchain and bitcoin.
What truly piqued my interest at their booth was a book titled Goodnight Bitcoin, featuring vivid illustrations. As a father of three little crypto enthusiasts, I couldn’t resist picking up a copy to take back to Ireland. The kids often hear about bitcoin at home, and with some merchandise I’ve gathered, they are quite familiar with the bitcoin symbol appearing on plastic coins they enjoy playing with daily.
I decided to share a brief review of the book here, as it offers a refreshing departure from the typical crypto platforms, or wallet/mining content that we usually spotlight on Bitcoins In Ireland.
The book narrates the journey of bitcoin’s inception through vibrant illustrations and introduces the two main characters: Satoshi, a fluffy purple monster with horns, and Hal, a dapper monster in red and orange wearing a top hat. Satoshi had a brilliant idea but needed assistance. He reached out to his friend, and together they embarked on an adventure to create a new kind of money (bitcoin), which all the other monsters found both impossible and amusing.
Utilizing mathematics and cryptography, they successfully crafted the first block in January 2009, laying the foundation for the bitcoin blockchain. As time passed, they enlisted more monsters to join their cause. However, Satoshi vanished in 2011, yet the network he established continued to grow by adding blocks steadily. The story concludes with a goodnight to the blocks, miners, Satoshis, and nodes before Hal ascends to the moon in a rocket ship.
The book is printed on high-quality cardstock and has proven to be quite durable. When I’m away on business, my wife often reads it to the kids, and they enjoy fetching it from time to time due to the captivating artwork. The text also flows nicely with rhymes, making it a lovely five-minute bedtime story for them. The book’s glossy cardstock withstands the playful tugging of toddlers and is easy to clean, which is crucial given that bedtime often involves biscuit-covered hands or the occasional milk spill.
The creators offer a variety of products, including character magnets, the book itself, and its sequel, “If You Give A Monster A Bitcoin”, both priced at $14.99 plus shipping. They accept payments via credit cards or bitcoin on the mainnet or lightning network. There are also several bundles available, such as the two books for $26.99, the SHAmory game for $19.99, the two books along with the game for $44.99, or a mega bundle that includes both books, the card game, and an item called a Sats Ledger, which consists of two savings ledgers (one for your child and one for another person such as a parent) to record transactions (like earned pocket money), demonstrating the concept of a decentralized ledger. A 10% discount code is also available for those who subscribe to their newsletter.
Overall, it’s a perfect book for anyone with a young crypto enthusiast, for friends or family members who are expecting, or for those wanting to introduce young children to the fundamental ideas surrounding bitcoin and crypto at large.
