- Worldcoin has been rebranded to ‘World’ and has launched various new features to improve its World ID.
- The initiative also revealed the mainnet launch of its blockchain, World Chain.
The blockchain-based identity verification project Worldcoin is now known simply as “World” following its rebranding announcement on October 17.
Co-founders Sam Altman and Alex Blania disclosed the name change at a company event in San Francisco. Along with the rebranding, the project introduced a series of enhancements aimed at extending ‘proof-of-humanity’ technology to a broader audience.
One significant announcement involved the launch of a new version of the biometric identification device known as the Orb. The company stated that the next-generation Orb utilizes NVIDIA’s latest Jetson chipset, achieving up to five times the AI performance of its predecessor.
Additionally, World has rolled out World ID 3.0, an upgraded version designed to facilitate enhanced verification on a global scale. The World ID Credentials and Deep Face features further bolster this capability, allowing users with NFC-enabled passports to authenticate their identity via their devices.

As outlined in the blog post, verified passport holders can access the native cryptocurrency WLD even before they have fully verified their ID using the Orb.
Launch of World Chain mainnet
October 17 also marked the mainnet launch of World Chain, the layer-2 chain that the World Foundation announced earlier in the year. As of Thursday, October 17, 2024, around 15 million users have either migrated or are in the process of migrating to World Chain.
World Chain is positioned as a blockchain network that will emphasize human engagement and transactions over automated processes, and it has launched with backing from multiple crypto platforms, including Dune, Uniswap, Optimism, Alchemy, Safe, and Etherscan.
