The UK’s Gambling Commission has accused Premier League crypto partner Sorare of operating without a gambling license.

Today, the commission announced, “Sorare is facing charges for providing gambling facilities without an operating license,” in violation of the Gambling Act 2005. A court date is set for October 4.

Sorare, a fantasy football game that utilizes the Ethereum blockchain for trading football cards, disputes these claims and contends that the law has been misinterpreted. It told the Guardian, “The commission has misunderstood our operations and incorrectly asserted that gambling laws pertain to Sorare.”

“We are aware of the allegations made by the Gambling Commission and have engaged our legal counsel in the UK to contest them. We categorically refute any assertion that Sorare constitutes a gambling product under UK law,” it added.

The commission initiated its investigation into the $4.3 billion company back in 2021.

Clubs in the Champions League such as Atlético de Madrid, Sturm Graz, and AC Milan are sponsored by Sorare, among the 23 teams in the tournament linked to a crypto company.

The Guardian reports that the gambling authority has previously exercised its enforcement powers only once, against an individual who was manipulating greyhound races through drugging dogs, highlighting the unusual nature of the current charges. This prior prosecution resulted in a conviction and the offender being jailed.
