In recent weeks, we have been closely observing safety and security regarding Istanbul. Specifically, our attention has been directed towards how the events in Israel and the Gaza Strip might affect the safety of attendees.
Whenever we organize an event, we make it a priority to evaluate potential risks. For Devconnect Istanbul, we have engaged with our event organizer partners, consulted local community members, and kept a watchful eye on government advisories relevant to our community and the area. Recently, we took the extra step of collaborating with external risk advisory services to analyze where adjustments might be necessary based on regional circumstances.
As we prepare for further updates, we wish to highlight two important points:
-
While the current threat level aimed specifically at the Devconnect event is low, a considerable risk of large demonstrations, targeted violence, or disturbances in different neighborhoods of Istanbul exists. These risks could potentially escalate in the coming weeks if the situation in Israel and Gaza intensifies.
-
There is an elevated risk for Israelis, Israeli citizens, and individuals of Jewish faith or heritage. The Israeli government has issued a warning for Israelis in the country to leave Turkey promptly.
Consequently, we strongly encourage high-risk individuals to take these advisories seriously and reconsider their travel arrangements, while we continue to assess recommendations for others and strive to provide clarity regarding the status of Devconnect events organized by EF.
We recognize that this may cause discomfort for some, but we have chosen to prioritize the safety of our community members and feel it is our duty to communicate the insights we have gathered at the earliest opportunity.
The past few weeks have involved challenging and emotional choices for many within our community, which consists of individuals with varied viewpoints. Alongside the identified risks, we acknowledge the physical distance between Istanbul and the epicenter of the conflict, as well as the fact that a vibrant local community has remained proactive and positive throughout. In this regard, we have received feedback from those who would be personally affected, team members currently in conflict zones, organizing teams, and others who have dedicated their year to preparing for these events.
We will keep you updated as the regional situation evolves. Thank you for your continued understanding during this intricate period.
