Theta Labs has introduced EdgeCloud for Mobile, enabling users to leverage the GPU power of their smartphones as nodes within its decentralized network, thereby earning TFUEL tokens.
A press release sent to crypto.news revealed that EdgeCloud for Mobile seeks to tap into the computing power of approximately 3.9 billion active Android devices worldwide to enhance its decentralized cloud computing framework.
Theta EdgeCloud operates as a DePIN-driven hybrid cloud-edge computing platform that harnesses over 30,000 distributed nodes to deliver scalable and cost-efficient GPU computing resources. As smartphones continue to become more powerful and capable of executing complex computations, the platform aims to make the most of these advancements.
Mitch Liu, co-founder and CEO of Theta Labs, stated that integrating smartphones into its decentralized network of nodes would “fundamentally transform the scale” of its operations.
“Expanding from 30,000 PC nodes to potentially millions of mobile devices significantly enhances our network capabilities. Each device contributes to our collective GPU power,” Liu further explained.
These devices will facilitate AI computations, such as video object detection, by executing small, parallel tasks. Theta Labs estimates that if just 30,000 Android devices contribute their GPU resources for eight hours daily, they can produce an impressive 240,000 hours of computational effort in one day.
The EdgeCloud mobile app, currently available on the Google Play Store, allows users the option to share resources only when their device is plugged in or connected to a Wi-Fi network, ensuring minimal battery consumption and data use while contributing to the network and earning passive income.
Users receive TFUEL tokens, the native currency of Theta Network, in return for sharing their resources. At the time of writing, the altcoin had risen 98.8% in value over the past year.
The application supports any Android phone or tablet produced after 2020, with no geographical limitations.
As previously reported by crypto.news, Theta EdgeCloud has already collaborated with several academic partners who utilize the platform’s resources for cutting-edge AI research in areas such as media, healthcare, bioinformatics, and finance. The latest institution to engage with the DePIN-powered network is Seoul Women’s University.
