Participants in the Solana ecosystem have been focused on mobile devices since the launch of the Saga phone, and a SOL-based group has just shared its plans for a web3 gaming venture.
Just a day before the Solana (SOL) Breakpoint event in Singapore, a SOL-native team known as Play Solana revealed the first handheld gaming console developed on the layer-1 blockchain. The startup refers to its console as the “Play Solana Gen1” or “PSG1.” Some users on social media have noted its resemblance to classic gaming devices, similar to the famous Nintendo Game Boy.
The gaming console will support SOL’s decentralized network, although the specific web3 titles that users can engage with have yet to be disclosed. PlaySolana also cautioned that the actual device may vary from the promotional images shown, and the launch date is still a mystery.
A growing number of blockchain development teams are looking into mobile devices as web3 adoption grows worldwide. The successor to the SOL Saga phone, named “Seeker,” has already exceeded 140,000 presales after coming out from stealth mode.
In the gaming sector, Mysten Labs, the organization behind another layer-1 blockchain, Sui (SUI), has also introduced a console. The SuiPlay0X1 claims to be the first web3-native handheld gaming device in the world. Deliveries for this Sui console are expected to begin in the first half of 2025.
The success of these blockchain gaming initiatives remains uncertain. As reported by crypto.news, a study by Elympic indicated that platforms like Telegram significantly fueled web3 gaming growth in 2024.
