On October 24, 2024, Ethereum developers held a virtual meeting for All Core Developers Execution (ACDE) Call #199, which was chaired by Tim Beiko, who is the Protocol Support Lead at the Ethereum Foundation. These bi-weekly meetings are crucial for deliberating and coordinating changes within Ethereum’s execution layer (EL), as reported by Galaxy.com.
Pectra Devnet 4 and 5 Updates
The meeting reaffirmed that EIP 7742 will be included in the upcoming Pectra upgrade, with plans to double the block gas limit over the subsequent two years without necessitating a hard fork. Pectra Devnet 4 was launched on October 18, 2024, revealing some issues with clients such as Erigon and EthereumJS. In addition, work for Pectra Devnet 5 involves modifications to gas costs associated with EIP 2537, along with updates for EIP 7685 and EIP 7702.
Debate on Block Gas Limit Increase
The proposal to gradually double the block gas limit over a two-year period sparked discussion. While proponents like Ben Adams from Nethermind were in favor of EIP 7790, others advocated for additional research and testing. Several developers raised concerns regarding the implementation of related EIPs, including EIP 4444 and EIP 7623, prior to increasing the block gas capacity.
Revert Error Codes and Schedule for November Calls
Felix Lange suggested the introduction of official revert error codes for contract calls to the Execution API in order to standardize practices across different clients. The call also discussed the November ACD meeting schedule, deciding to proceed with the planned call on November 21 while canceling the testing calls scheduled for November 11 and 18.
