On October 3, 2024, Ethereum developers met via Zoom for the All Core Developers Consensus Call #143, as reported by Galaxy.com. These biweekly gatherings provide developers a forum to discuss and plan modifications to Ethereum’s consensus layer, termed the Beacon Chain. The call was led by Alex Stokes, a researcher at the Ethereum Foundation (EF), who facilitated conversations on significant updates and ongoing challenges.
Pectra Devnet 3 and 4 Progress Updates
The meeting brought attention to current debugging activities in Pectra Devnet 3, where participation has reportedly declined due to a known bug in the Besu client, which is currently under review. The readiness of Pectra Devnet 4 was also examined, with developers addressing outstanding pull requests (PRs) to enhance the execution requests framework. A discussion arose regarding the optimal method for managing these requests, yet no agreement was reached, leading to further conversations that will take place on Discord.
Among the updates, it was anticipated that the CL specifications for Devnet 4 would likely derive from the “alpha.7” release. Stokes noted that PR 3918 is close to being merged, while PR 3818 is pending review. The team also deliberated on how to handle validator attestations, deciding to prioritize PR 3900 for immediate action.
PeerDAS Devnet and New Execution API Method
The PeerDAS devnet encountered difficulties achieving finalization, indicating possible relaunches with improved client versions. EF DevOps Engineer Barnabas Busa pointed out the ongoing debugging activities and called for a breakout session to tackle these challenges.
A new execution API method, “engine_getBlobsV1,” aims to aid validators with limited bandwidth by streamlining block proposals. Stokes underlined the importance of implementing this feature, with client teams from Prysm, Lodestar, and Teku actively working on it.
Blob Throughput and Pectra Testnet Initiatives
Conversations regarding scaling blob throughput progressed, with consensus to collect more data before making a decision on increasing the blob target in Pectra. EF Researcher Toni Wahrstätter shared empirical findings related to block reorganization rates, highlighting the necessity for further investigation into node syncing capabilities.
In anticipation of Devcon, the annual Ethereum developer conference, plans were discussed to initiate a dedicated Pectra testnet. This venture is intended to offer participants a venue for testing integrations and new code modifications, although concerns persist over the stability of Devnet 4 in time for the occasion.
All in all, the call emphasized the collaborative nature and obstacles faced by Ethereum developers as they work on crucial updates to the network’s framework.
