Do Androids Dream of AI? Zero-Knowledge and Machine Learning

In the iconic opening sequence of Blade Runner, a character named Holden conducts a fictional version of the Turing test to determine if Leon is a replicant (a type of humanoid robot). During the test, Holden narrates a story aimed at provoking an emotional response from Leon. “You find yourself in a desert, strolling through the sand, when suddenly you glance down… you spot a tortoise, Leon. It’s making its way towards you…” As Holden continues this imagined tale, Leon becomes increasingly disturbed, revealing he is not human.

While we haven’t yet reached the scenario depicted in Blade Runner, the integration of AI and machine learning into our daily lives necessitates confidence that the AI models we depend on are genuinely what they represent.

This is precisely where zero-knowledge proofs come into play. Fundamentally, ZK proofs allow one party to demonstrate to another that a particular computation was performed accurately without disclosing the actual data or necessitating the verifier to redo the calculations (commonly known as the succinctness property). Imagine solving a sudoku puzzle: while it may be challenging to complete, confirming the solution is considerably simpler.

This characteristic is particularly advantageous when computational tasks are conducted off-chain to prevent overwhelming a network and incurring exorbitant fees. With ZK proofs, these off-chain tasks can still undergo verification without adding strain to blockchains, which face strict computational limits as all nodes must validate each block. In summary, ZK cryptography is essential for scaling AI machine learning in a secure and efficient manner.

ZK verifies ML models for safe AI scaling

Machine learning, a segment of AI, is recognized for its intensive computational requirements, necessitating extensive data processing to simulate human learning and decision-making. From image classification to predictive modeling, ML models are poised to revolutionize nearly every industry—if they haven’t already—but they also challenge computational limits. So, how can we accurately verify and attest that ML models are genuine while leveraging blockchains, where on-chain operations can be exceedingly costly?

We require a verifiable method to ascertain the trustworthiness of AI models, ensuring that the model in use remains untampered and accurately represented. When you use ChatGPT to inquire about your favorite sci-fi films, you likely trust the underlying model, and occasional dips in response quality may not be critical. However, in sectors like finance and healthcare, precision and reliability are imperative. A single error could trigger widespread negative economic ramifications globally.

This is where ZK becomes crucial. By utilizing ZK proofs, ML computations can be executed off-chain while still permitting on-chain verification. This innovation creates new possibilities for deploying AI models within blockchain applications. Zero-knowledge machine learning, or ZKML, facilitates cryptographic verification of ML algorithms and their results while maintaining the confidentiality of the actual algorithms, thereby reconciling AI’s computational needs with blockchain’s security requirements.

One of the most promising applications of ZKML is in DeFi. Picture a liquidity pool where an AI algorithm optimizes asset rebalancing to maximize returns while continuously refining its trading strategies. ZKML can perform these computations off-chain and subsequently employ ZK proofs to validate that the ML model is authentic, rather than relying on another algorithm or someone else’s trades. Moreover, ZK can secure user trading data, preserving financial confidentiality even if the ML models utilized for trading are accessible. The outcome? Secure, AI-driven DeFi protocols with ZK verifiability.

Understanding our machines better is crucial

As AI becomes more integral to human endeavors, anxieties regarding tampering, manipulation, and adversarial assaults are growing. AI models, particularly those influencing critical decisions, must withstand attacks that could compromise their outputs. It’s essential that we elevate AI safety beyond the conventional framework (i.e., ensuring models don’t act unpredictably) to foster a trustless environment where the models themselves are easily verifiable.

In a landscape where models proliferate, we essentially navigate our lives under the guidance of AI. As the count of models increases, so does the potential for attacks aimed at undermining model integrity. This is especially concerning in instances where an AI model’s output may not reflect reality.

By incorporating ZK cryptography into AI, we can initiate the establishment of trust and accountability within these models today. Similar to an SSL certificate or a security emblem in your web browser, there may soon be a symbol signifying AI verifiability—indicating that the model you’re interacting with is precisely what you expect.

In Blade Runner, the Voight-Kampff test sought to differentiate replicants from humans. Today, as we navigate an increasingly AI-centric world, we confront an analogous challenge: distinguishing genuine AI models from those that might be compromised. In the realm of crypto, ZK cryptography could serve as our Voight-Kampff test—an effective, scalable approach to confirm the integrity of AI models without compromising their inner workings. This way, we are not merely questioning if androids dream of electric sheep; we are also ensuring that the AI guiding our digital existence is exactly what it purports to be.
