Clearbot, established by graduates from Hong Kong, employs NVIDIA Jetson technology to autonomously and efficiently clean waterways, combating ocean pollution with AI-powered vessels.
Clearbot is pioneering sustainable environmental initiatives by autonomously purifying waterways. This AI-powered startup, co-founded by University of Hong Kong alumni Sidhant Gupta and Utkarsh Goel, harnesses NVIDIA Jetson technology to operate their sea-cleaning boats, as highlighted by the NVIDIA Blog.
What started as a simple university project has advanced into a highly efficient prototype that can extract up to three tons of waste daily from aquatic ecosystems. Initially conceived with rudimentary materials such as discarded water bottles and a GoPro camera, Clearbot has seen remarkable growth, now addressing crucial environmental challenges, especially in tourism-dependent areas where clean beaches are vital for the economy.
Efficient Waterway Cleanup with Jetson Xavier Technology
Clearbot’s eco-friendly boats, powered by Jetson Xavier NX, are optimized for energy efficiency and are able to self-dock at solar charging stations upon completing eight-hour missions. Ranging from 10 to 16 feet in length, these vessels are equipped with dual cameras for navigation and debris identification, enabling them to dodge obstacles while effectively collecting litter.
The incorporation of NVIDIA’s technology allows Clearbot to operate at significantly reduced costs compared to traditional methods, which typically involve diesel-powered boats and large teams. This innovation not only cuts operational expenses but also lessens the carbon emissions, thus contributing to global initiatives aimed at combating climate change.
Leveraging Clearbot for Environmental Restoration
Clearbot’s influence reaches beyond Hong Kong and India, with enterprises such as Kingspan utilizing its technology to cleanse rivers and lakes in India. The initiative has achieved notable waste reduction, removing 1.2 tons monthly in Nongstoin, India, and extracting 15 tons from Umiam Lake in Meghalaya within a three-month span.
Enhancing Environmental Monitoring Through Clearbot
In addition to waste collection, Clearbot’s technology supports comprehensive environmental monitoring, including controlling marine pollution and conducting underwater inspections. The collected data is geotagged, offering valuable information for local authorities and environmental groups to identify and address pollution sources effectively.
This data-driven methodology empowers local governments and NGOs to make strategic decisions, like enacting bans on plastic products, by tracing pollution to its origins. The extensive data compilation made possible by NVIDIA’s technology reinforces Clearbot’s capability to facilitate significant environmental advancements.
