Leaders in the crypto market Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) experienced significant declines over the past 24 hours, coinciding with an upcoming FOMC (Federal Open Market Committee) meeting and following an assassination attempt on former US president Donald Trump.
Bitcoin dropped over 2% in the last day, trading at $58,857.47 as of 3:40 a.m. EST, per CoinMarketCap. Meanwhile, ETH lost more than 5% in value, now trading at $2,297.78.
Fed Expected to Lower Rates at Upcoming FOMC Meeting for First Time Since Early 2020
The upcoming FOMC meeting is scheduled for September 17-18, with economists anticipating an interest rate cut ranging between 25 and 50 basis points. The announcement will be made on September 18 at 18:00 GMT, marking the Fed’s first rate cut since early 2020.
Other central banks will also announce rate decisions this week. Brazil’s central bank is set to meet on September 17-18, while the Bank of England, South African Reserve Bank, and Norway’s Norges Bank will reveal their interest rate decisions on September 19.
Trump “Safe” Following Nearby Gunfire
Former US president Trump is reported safe after nearby gunfire was detected. A campaign spokesperson issued a statement on September 15, saying, “President Trump is safe following gunfire in his vicinity. Details to follow.”
The Republican contender for this year’s presidential election was playing golf at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida, when the shots were heard nearby, prompting an immediate lockdown of the golf course.
