The innovative AI chatbot, UlangiziAI, is transforming agriculture in Malawi by providing multilingual, instant assistance to farmers via WhatsApp.
Farmers in Malawi are experiencing the benefits of a revolutionary AI-driven chatbot offering essential agricultural advice in various languages, as reported by the NVIDIA Technical Blog. UlangiziAI provides on-demand guidance to aid farmers in boosting yields, managing pests, and treating crop diseases.
Multilingual and Multimodal Capability
Launched in February, UlangiziAI is available through WhatsApp, enabling farmers to send text, voice messages, and even images for review. The chatbot can communicate in both English and Chichewa, the native language for nearly half of Malawi’s population of 20 million. This capability is vital as approximately 30% of the populace is illiterate.
Tailored for Local Needs
Developed by Opportunity International, an NGO with over 21 years of service in Malawi, the chatbot takes into account the low smartphone adoption in rural regions. The organization has trained local farmers to use smartphones equipped with the UlangiziAI app to support their communities. ‘Ulangizi’ means ‘guidance’ or ‘advice’ in Chichewa.
Tackling Systemic Challenges
Paul Essene, one of the lead developers of UlangiziAI, highlighted the structural obstacles Malawian farmers encounter. Given that most Malawians survive on about $2 daily and 80% live in rural areas, access to governmental agricultural resources is sporadic. Farmers often travel long distances, only to discover that these offices are closed. UlangiziAI seeks to fill this void by offering timely information on livestock, crops, fertilizers, and other farming issues.
Technical Architecture
The chatbot operates on NVIDIA A100 Tensor Core GPUs hosted in the Azure Cloud, leveraging the AI workflow platform Gooey.AI. Due to the scarcity of data in Chichewa, Gooey.AI utilized creative methods to enhance the chatbot’s functionality. When a voice message is sent through WhatsApp, it is transcribed and translated into English with cutting-edge language models like Meta’s MMS Large or OpenAI’s Whisper 3. Images of plants or pests are analyzed using OpenAI’s GPT4o. The collected data is then cross-referenced with the Malawi Ministry of Agriculture Guide to Agriculture Production Manual, a thorough 450-page compendium.
Instant Solutions
UlangiziAI has drastically cut down the time required for farmers to receive crucial advice—from days to just seconds. The initial pilot program attracted over 4,000 inquiries in both English and Chichewa within a three-month period. Users have praised the app for its prompt and precise replies.
Looking Ahead
Opportunity International intends to extend the chatbot’s availability to Kenya, adding Swahili and other local languages by late this year or early next year. This initiative aims to provide comparable advantages to Kenyan farmers.
