World Maritime Day 2024 is scheduled for September 26, 2024, with the International Maritime Organization's World Maritime Day Parallel Event set to be conducted in Spain from October 20-22, 2024, alongside art exhibitions in the US during Climate Week NYC. This year's observance commemorates the 50th anniversary of the 1974 SOLAS Convention, a principal treaty of the IMO that governs maritime safety, under the theme “Navigating the future: safety first!”

This theme is intricately linked to the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and several of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 7 which emphasizes access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and clean energy, SDG 8 that advocates for sustainable economic growth, SDG 9 focused on building resilient infrastructure and fostering innovative sustainable industrialization, SDG 13 which tackles climate change and its effects, and SDG 14 dedicated to the conservation and sustainable use of oceans, seas, and marine resources. As noted by IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim stated:

“This theme will enable us to emphasize the comprehensive range of safety regulations needed due to the emergence and modification of technologies and the adoption of alternative fuels, including measures aimed at lowering GHG emissions from ships while ensuring that shipping safety and efficiency are both upheld and potentially enhanced, guaranteeing a smooth and efficient international trade flow.”

Usyncro is a sustainable online platform headquartered in Spain that streamlines international trade and transportation documentation by ensuring transparency, security, and carbon traceability through blockchain technology and AI. This year, the “Digital Logistics Corridor” was honored with “The Supply Chain Innovation” award by the United Nations Development Program. The platform employs AI and blockchain as a service, integrating advanced features that target carbon footprint traceability, as detailed in Usyncro's Investor Deck.

By enhancing efficiency, it reduces shipment-related costs. It ensures document integrity and traceability, thus minimizing the risks of fraud and errors. Additionally, it simplifies adherence to international customs and tax regulations, which poses a significant challenge for businesses engaged in global trade by lowering compliance penalty risks. Therefore, the platform represents a step towards sustainability in global logistics. Cristina Martin, CEO and co-founder of Usyncro, described her platform as “a B2B & B2G multimodal, carbon neutral, interoperable, and dynamic SaaS platform that optimizes global logistics through artificial intelligence and blockchain as a service. We are currently centering our efforts on Europe and Latin America, but we aim to expand into the USA.”

Usyncro officially launched its operations in Latin America following an alliance with ALACAT, the Federation of National Associations of Freight Forwarders and International Logistics Operators from 16 countries across Latin America and the Caribbean. This partnership aims to enhance digital corridors between Europe and Latin America and was fortified with an interoperability agreement between Usyncro and CargoX, two leaders in blockchain-based solutions for managing commercial documents electronically in the supply chain. As Cristina Martin added:

“We have quantified the impact of the volume of documentation produced during goods shipments; for every ten tons of paper, we are alleviating 4,000 tons of CO2 emissions from the atmosphere.”

This sustainable collaboration between Usyncro and CargoX capitalizes on blockchain technology for logistics and document management, considerably easing the intricacies of international trade. It streamlines operational processes, diminishes entry barriers to new markets, facilitates regulatory compliance, and enhances global trade management. This partnership signifies progress towards the digitalization of international trade and opens myriad prospects for innovation and growth within the global market for businesses and entrepreneurs alike. Therefore, it serves as a guiding light for the future of international commerce, driven by blockchain technology which enhances efficiency, transparency, and accessibility.
